Well, we had fun!! I even got up and sung a few to the delight of all my fans and new groupies. Eric the guitarist rocks. The Norgies didn’t show up ’til midnight and seemed a little surprised at the welcome they got. 15 divers in the group and a pretty hardcore bunch they turned out to be. Lots of good dives and plenty of good food and beverages consumed.

Cuba was the first “un-official” trip that members of the Maya Diving club undertook.

We landed in Havana, to check out the sights & do a bit of the “tourist thing”, teh hopped on a bus for a scenic trip down to Trinidad. Stopping briefly at the “Bay Of Pigs”, & Cienfuegos the journey ended in the small town of Trinidad.

At the Ancon resort, home of Prodive Cubana, we were met by Leo, (instructor / “owner”) and booked 4 dives for the next two days. Halle used these dives towards her Advanced course & now just has to finish with her Advanced Navigation.

The 4 dives were Baros Nondinos (Wreck 18m), El Coral (Boat 16m), followed the next day by Las Chopas (Deep 30m) & La Posa 28m. The visibility was good, water nice & warm & the reefs interesting, with very similar life to what we see at our dive sites. We did spot some huge Groupers, and Morays. I have made notes on some of the other stuff, but will get confirmation on the names, & post it.

The dive operation was run a bit different than Maya Diving, but will discuss that later.

All & all, good diving & a fun experience. Maya Dive club is taking up the Padi challenge to “Go Places & Meet people”

Tickets booked, bags packed, & ready to go to Cuba, Whoo hoo!!!

But before I leave we managed to take a very nice Italian couple to dive today. Went to Tankha, & as always it did not dissapoint. saw the usual fish that always welocome us when we go there, & a couple of new faces. Spotted an Eagle Ray with a very short tail, almost too short. Almost as something took a bite off it… Wanted to ask the fellow about it, but he didn’t stick around. Maybe we’ll spot him again soon.

Got surprised by a couple of Baracuda that came in real close, which means that they are getting used to us, I hope. Would make for good photo opportunities in the future, so get those camera housings out of the closet, & sign up for the next Digital Photography course.

Speaking of courses, Jamie & I have streamlined our courses so if you have a bit of spare time, join us and continue your adventure dives. Or take up the Master Scuba Diver Challange. get those specialities done, and join the ranks of Master Scuba Divers.

Or for those of you who have not done it yet, me & Jamie will be conducting Rescue Diver courses in November & December.

Anyway, fill try my best to stay in touch from Cuba, but if not happy diving & to the rest of the Maya diving team; Tim, Will, Budgy & Jamie & the boat captains keep things afloat, will miss you & I’ll have a couple of Mojito’s on you guys!!

So I took the day, well half of it off to go to Playa. Booking my trip to Cuba to explore some dive sites over there. The weather looks good for Cuba, And hopefully with the Maya Diving club up & running, we will soon visit more exotic dive destinations.
In the meantime, Tim, Will & Jamie will hold the fort while I’m off to Cuba. Thanx a lot Tim for the opportunity to go to Cuba & take Mayadiving to the next level…

The dive center down at Dreams Resort is being given a facelift. A new coat of paint & a bit of cleaning up in general is at the order of the day.

We also did some snorkeling at Dos Ojos this morning. There was some diving on the cards, but Budgy was experiencing some problems with his leg. So with safety first in mind, the dive was postponed, maybe tomorrow Budge (did you say the XX helped for the leg??)

So this afternoon I spend some time in the pool, practicing my reeling & diving with stages. Who said diving is not work.

Tim is also hard at work down at the Crucero, or so he likes everyone to think. Jamie & I surprised him when we dropped of the snorkelers. Keep up the hard work Chief, remember lead by example & all of that…

There has also been some comments about the Blue Skies!!! at the end of my posts, so to keep everyone happy….

20 October 2008 Quick feedback on the weekend: The function in Chemuyil turned out to be an entertaining event. New friends were made & some familiar faces also turned up.Myself Will & Jamie represented Maya diving from early on, until the boss finally turned up. Needless to say, thats when things got slightly out of hand. “Canadians”, cant take ‘em anywhere.

But the evening turned out to be a lot of fun, & Heather & Amanda turned up the next morning for DSD dives. The viz was good, & everyone enjoyed it. On the boat while checking the gear, my SPG hose burst, so we had to make one or two quick changes. Fortunately Jamie was there to give a hand, so the dives went ahead as planned.

18 October 2008 Another cloudy day over Maya diving & the rest of Tulum. Will had a double tank dive at Dos Ojos this morning, and Jamie had to keep himself busy with a snorkler also at Dos Ojos. But everything went smoothly, and both clients came back with happy faces & smiles.

Tonight should be fun-filled. The Maya diving team has been invited to the home-owners meeting at the community at Chemuyil. This will be a good opportunity to mingle with the locals & get new members for the Maya Diving Club.

The team is having a quiet day at the office, with the wind acting up a bit.
But in the mean time we are keeping busy with maintaining equipment, cleaning the shop, & we started a fitness program. With Kiwi heading the way, we are swimming in the mornings, doing a bit of weight training & just keeping fit in general in preparation for the upcoming season.

Hey, I actually saw an article about Guillermo’s latest project on Yahoo news by chance a couple of months ago, I should have postyed then so you could have seen it Maggie. They have discovered several Mayan altars deep in caves and then if you go underwater through a hole kind of hidden at the back of the altar you can come out to another secret altar. There are all kinds of artifacts and wall paintings etc apparently there. We actually know an archeologist that is working on the project and lives here in Tulum.
Maybe with some luck we might eventually be able to go and dive there (cave divers only I’m afraid)
I’ll post a link when I find something.
